Range. Temperate China; tropical Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka; Indo-Chi­na; Malaysia. Naturalized elsewhere. In Myanmar, found in Yangon.

Uses

Root: Acrid tubers applied in poultices as a counter-irritant, and also to de­stroy maggots in sores on cattle.

Origin

Peninsular India, and from Yamuna eastwards; also grown in South India.

Action:

Tuber—applied as poultice on scirrhous tumours (fresh tuber is very acrid and a powerful stimulant). Eaten with bananas, the tubers relax the bowels and provide relief in haemorrhoids (tubers become innocuous on heating or drying).
